How to get started as an undergraduate student
Welcome to AU! Now that you’ve been admitted as an undergraduate student, follow these steps and explore the resources available to help you prepare for your studies.
Steps to get started
Step 1
Log in to myAU and review the tabs at the top of the page.
Tip: Under “Student Home,” review My Courses, Student Record, Message Centre, Office 365, and My Letters.
Step 2
Review your program requirements in the Undergraduate Calendar. Then log in to Degree Works to view your program requirements and progress.
Tip: Access Degree Works through myAU under “Student Home” and “Manage Your Program.”
If you are waiting for a transfer credit evaluation, you will gain full access to Degree Works once your evaluation is complete. We recommend waiting for your evaluation results before registering to avoid duplicating courses.
Step 3
View the course offerings page and register for a course.
If you need help selecting a course, contact an academic advisor.
Tip: Self-funded students register through myAU. Students applying for financial aid register through Student Financial Aid (SFA). In most cases, 3 courses per term qualify as full-time funding.
Resources
AU offers an undergraduate orientation that introduces services and resources available to you.
We strongly encourage you to complete the orientation after registering for your first course. You will receive access through Brightspace once registered.
Students who have applied but not registered do not have access to orientation.
AU offers a range of support services. Teams provide guidance, advice, and resources to support your academic success.
AU offers several funding options.
To submit courses to Student Financial Aid (SFA), complete the Course Registration Plan (CRP). Step 1 must be completed before Step 2 of the SFA application process.
Funded students should plan course selections at least 3 months before their SFA deadline. Check funding application timelines and other funding FAQs.
Tip: Prior to the funding application deadline, you may book an appointment with an academic advisor for reviewing course selection/program planning, or use the Degree Works Planner to submit course selections for review by an academic advisor. Once approved, submit your courses through the CRP to SFA.
Degree Works is a program planning tool that tracks your academic progress.
Access Degree Works through myAU under “Manage Your Program.”
Your worksheet shows program requirements, transfer credit, completed coursework, and remaining requirements.
The Worksheet provides an overview of your program requirements and progress.
It shows:
- required courses
- completed and in-progress coursework
- transfer credit
Review the “Fall Through” section for courses with credits applied that may not fit into your program.
Notes appear at the bottom of the Worksheet. Contact an academic advisor if you need clarification.
The Look Ahead Feature shows how potential courses may fit into your program. These scenarios are not saved.
The Planner allows you to create a course plan and submit it for advisor review.
You can:
- add courses by entering them manually
- drag and drop courses into future terms
- save your plan
- submit it for approval
Do not register for courses until your plan is approved.
Note: The Planner does not register you for courses.
The GPA calculator helps you estimate your program GPA or determine what grades you need to reach a target.
The GPA shown in Degree Works reflects your program GPA, not your cumulative transcript GPA.
The program GPA is used for graduation requirements, awards, honours lists, and distinction.
