In-person invigilation

You can take invigilated exams with any in-person invigilator approved by AU as part of the Canada-wide Athabasca University exam invigilation network.

It is your responsibility to pay any fees associated with exam invigilation.

If you choose in-person invigilation and live within 40 km of an approved AU examination centre, you must write your examination(s) at 1 of the centres. You do not need to use the nearest centre; you can choose any centre in the network that meets your needs and fits your schedule.

If you live outside Canada, or more than 40 km from an approved invigilation centre, contact the Examination Services team in the Office of the Registrar to see if there is an approved invigilator in your area. Email the Exam Unit with the following information:

  • Name
  • Student ID number
  • Name of the city/town/country where you live

Writing your exam in-person with a pre-approved invigilator

If you want to write your online exam in person with a pre-approved invigilator, the following steps will take you through the process to book your final exam in person.

Steps:

  1. If you have not already done so, find your course syllabus and confirm that the exam is available to be taken at an in-person invigilation centre. If the option exists, continue.
  2. Contact your invigilator to ensure they are available on your chosen date.
  3. Schedule your exam appointment with your invigilator.
  4. Submit your exam request in your myAU account, ensuring the exam is requested at least 10 days before your desired write date, and the write date is before the course contract end date.

Writing your exam in-person with your own invigilator (needs AU approval)

If you want to write your exam in person with your own invigilator that has not yet been approved by AU. The following steps will take you through the process to book your final exam in person. You should begin this process at least 60 days before your proposed exam write date (though earlier is encouraged) to ensure enough time for your chosen invigilator to be approved.

Steps:

  1. Confirm that there is not an available invigilator within 40 km of your location on the pre-approved invigilation network, and be prepared to go through the process to have a new invigilator approved.
  2. If you have not already done so, find your course syllabus and confirm that the exam is available to be taken as an in-person exam. If the option exists, continue.
  3. Send the AU Exam Unit an email or phone them at 1-800-788-9041 to confirm there are no pre-approved invigilators in your area.
  4. Review AU’s invigilator criteria to find a proposed invigilator near you.
  5. Submit the new invigilator request form and e-mail it to the Exam Unit.
  6. If approved, which may take 30 days or more, schedule an appointment with your newly approved invigilator.
  7. Submit your exam request in your myAU account, making sure the exam is requested at least 10 days before your desired write date and the write date is before the course contract end date.
