Change of name

Athabasca University (AU) is committed to engaging with our students in ways that are respectful and inclusive. Our administrative practices and processes have been designed to reflect this commitment while protecting the integrity of AU’s official student records. There are a few ways in which a student can change their name with AU.

A legal name appears on an individual’s birth certificate, passport, citizenship certificate, or legal change of name certificate. As long as the name you use is not a misrepresentation or an attempt to avoid legal obligations, you may update your name in AU’s system wherever that functionality is available.

An affirmed/chosen name is a name an individual uses that may not match a given legal name. Besides “affirmed” or “chosen,” some people may also call this a “lived” or “preferred” name. For example, this name may reflect an individual’s gender identity or cultural or religious practice.
