Overview
GCAP 635: Intervening to Facilitate Client Change combines a theoretical and practical focus to develop a framework from which to approach the planning and implementation of client change interventions in a variety of contexts. It assumes that students have already mastered a repertoire of basic skills for establishing a working alliance and teaches students to use those skills in the design and implementation of intervention strategies that help promote change that is consistent with their goals.
Through theoretical analysis and applied skill development in online and/or workshop settings, students will be expected to develop competence in selected common approaches to intervening in counselling. The initial module of this course helps students establish a framework from which they can make clinically astute choices regarding intervention options they may use in counselling. Following this, students will select three further course modules that offer instruction in particular interventions common to counselling. In these, they will develop the initial understandings and competencies required to use these interventions. These can be further developed thereafter with supervised practice.
Outline
The course begins with five weeks of online study, structured as follows.

- Lesson 2: Client/Counsellor Factors: Assessment to Collaborative Goal-Setting
- Lesson 3: Classifying Interventions and Intervening Ethically
- Lesson 4: Selecting Interventions and Researching Interventions
- Lesson 5: Interventions and Plans
Students then select three modules from a range of options offered in either Summer Institute or online format:
