Overview
NURS 535: NP Consolidation is part of the Master of Nursing: Nurse Practitioner (MN-NP) degree and the Post-Masters Diploma: Nurse Practitioner (PMD-NP) program.
In NURS 535, you will review the roles, responsibilities, and competencies of nurse practitioners and further develop your professional identity and vision for practice. Key concepts introduced earlier in the program, including leadership, transition to practice, collaborative and independent practice, and health policy, are revisited and integrated as you prepare to complete the program.
Outline
NURS 535 is a paced course delivered over 13 weeks using a blended learning approach that combines asynchronous online learning and regular synchronous virtual sessions.
Course content focuses on the consolidation and integration of knowledge, skills, and competencies required for entry-level nurse practitioner practice. Emphasis is placed on the following:
- Integration and consolidation of nurse practitioner competencies in preparation for entry-level practice
- Preparation for the nurse practitioner program comprehensive examination
- Leadership, advocacy, health policy, and health equity in nurse practitioner practice
- Transition to practice, including role implementation, professional identity, and readiness for independent and collaborative practice
Learning outcomes
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- Analyze the challenges presented in transitioning to a nurse practitioner role including the need for ongoing competence and life-long learning;
- Examine strategies to build inter- and intra-professional and intersectoral teams and collaborative practice in the health care system;
- Evaluate and advocate for changes in health care policy and legislation to improve health outcomes;
- Utilize principles of team dynamics conflict resolution and mentorship to support collaboration;
- Analyze the legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements for self-employed nurse practitioners;
- Meet the entry level competencies as identified by the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (2023).
Evaluation
Assessment in NURS 535 consists of multiple course activities with assigned percentage weightings. Your final grade is based on overall performance across all required assessments. A variety of assessment approaches are used to evaluate achievement of the course learning outcomes.
