Overview
In NURS 534: NP Sexual and Reproductive Health is part of the Master of Nursing: Nurse Practitioner (MN-NP) degree and the Post-Masters Diploma: Nurse Practitioner (PMD-NP) program.
In NURS 534 you will develop knowledge and skills in the prevention and management of acute and chronic conditions related to preconception, perinatal care, sexual health, and the stages of reproductive life. You will also examine the importance of cultural humility and safety in providing sexual and reproductive care to adult clients across the gender continuum.
Outline
NURS 534 is a paced course delivered over 13 weeks using a blended learning approach that combines asynchronous online learning and regular synchronous virtual sessions.
Course content focuses on the development of competencies required for the assessment and management of sexual and reproductive health. Emphasis is placed on the following:
- Cultural humility, equity, diversity, and reproductive choice in sexual and reproductive health care
- Health promotion, screening, and management across the reproductive life course, including preconception, prenatal, and postpartum care
- Assessment and management of sexual health concerns
- Assessment and management of reproductive health conditions in adult populations
- Consideration of sex- and gender-related health issues within sexual and reproductive care
- Identification and management of complex and special considerations in sexual and reproductive health
Learning outcomes
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- Utilize evidence-based recommendations for health promotion, screening, and management of reproductive and sexual health-related issues;
- Analyze and synthesize clinical data from multiple sources to inform diagnoses and management of adult clients experiencing sexual and reproductive health issues, within the context of social determinants of health;
- Conduct assessments and provide care with sensitivity to the client’s culture, lived experiences, gender identity, sexuality, and personal expression;
- Integrate critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to formulate differential and final diagnoses;
- Using clinical reasoning, co-create a management plan based on the client’s preferences and goals;
- Apply harm-reduction strategies and culturally safe, evidence-informed practices to support clients and their families;
- Recognize obstetrical emergencies and initiate appropriate interventions.
Evaluation
Assessment in NURS 534 consists of multiple course activities with assigned percentage weightings. Your final grade is based on overall performance across all required assessments. A variety of assessment approaches are used to evaluate achievement of the course learning outcomes.
