Overview
SPAN 400 reviews and further develops language skills acquired in earlier Spanish courses. The emphasis is on advanced grammatical structures and the acquisition of a more specialized vocabulary. The objective of SPAN 400 is to strengthen both written and oral skills that will enable students to communicate in a variety of contexts. Students are expected to perform simple literary analyses.
Learning outcomes
Spanish 400 has been designed using an integrated four-skills approach: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The course prepares the student to use Spanish in real-life situations by developing oral and written communication skills. By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Recognize, employ, and combine advanced grammatical structures.
- Perform close readings of authentic texts in Spanish.
- Identify and describe social issues facing contemporary Hispanic society.
- Identify, describe, and analyze the impact of Hispanics in Canada and in the broader global context.
- Link various literary expressions to sociocultural situations.
- Communicate ideas using appropriate language, structure, and format in written and oral forms.
Evaluation
To receive credit for SPAN 400, students must complete and submit all of the written quizzes, oral presentations, and essay assignments, and write the final exam. Students must achieve a minimum grade of D (50 percent) on the final exam and an overall grade of at least D (50 percent) for the course.
Students will be evaluated on their understanding of the concepts presented in the course and on their ability to apply those concepts. The final grade in the course will be based on the marks achieved for the following activities.

Evaluation
To receive credit for the SPAN 400 challenge registration, students must achieve a grade of at least D (50 percent) on the exam.
