About Master of Arts – Interdisciplinary Studies, Literary Studies

Through Literary Studies, students closely read literature from many places, times, and traditions, in English, in translation, or in other languages (according to student and supervisor capabilities). Students learn and practice the discipline’s key methods, especially close, active reading and iterative, critical writing, while also learning and testing other methods and theories in the humanities and social sciences.

Admission requirements

Admission requirements include a baccalaureate degree and an academic writing assessment.

Overview

Advance your critical voice in a Literary Studies focus area within the master’s program that integrates theories, methods, and practices from the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

With Athabasca University’s Master of Arts – Interdisciplinary Studies, with a focus area in Literary Studies, students learn to think holistically, critically, and reflectively. They discover connections and overlap between specialized and generalized knowledge and improve writing, research, and problem-solving skills.

This focus area invites students to closely read and critically investigate literary texts and the contexts of their production, researching, critiquing, and creatively reworking current questions, such as how literary works represent and impact the real world.

Students will have the opportunity to explore their own interests while benefiting from the research and teaching strengths of faculty. Each program culminates in a final integrated project, capstone paper, or e-portfolio that exercises and deepens the student’s newly earned skills and knowledge.

Students can choose to complete this project in a paced study capstone course, or through an individual study project that will allow them to:

  • explore a question or issue with personal significance and relevance
  • relate academic research to a specific work or life situation
  • address a community problem

The Master of Arts – Interdisciplinary Studies is a 33-credit online master’s program. You must complete 18 credits through Athabasca University.
