About Master of Arts – Interdisciplinary Studies, Equity Studies

The online Equity Studies graduate focus explores the social, cultural, political, and economic forces that shape inequality and marginalization. In this focus area, you will examine how categories such as race, gender, class, sexuality, disability, age, religion, and geography are produced and used in society, and how systems of power shape institutions and everyday life.

You will study movements for social change and consider how communities challenge injustice and work toward more equitable futures. This focus area is well-suited to learners who want to better understand structures of inequity and apply critical scholarship to real-world social justice issues.

Program details

Overview

Participate in an equity and social justice focused degree that integrates theories, methods, and practices from the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

In the Master of Arts – Interdisciplinary Studies, Equity Studies focus area, you will develop holistic, critical, and reflective approaches to understanding inequality. You will examine how social categories such as race, gender, class, disability, sexuality, geography, and religion shape institutions and everyday life across local and global contexts. The program also explores environmental justice, intergenerational equity, and relationships between humans and the more-than-human world.

You will engage with interdisciplinary scholarship and movements for social change, applying theory to real-world institutions and community contexts.

The program concludes with a final integrated project or capstone paper. You may complete this in a paced capstone course or through an individual study project that allows you to:

  • explore a question or issue important to you
  • connect research to your work or life
  • address a community challenge
