Overview
FREN 200 trains students in spoken and written French as a continuation of FREN 100 and FREN 101. The course enables students to improve reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. FREN 200 leads the students through a major review of grammar, develops the students’ ability to understand and compose short passages and to discuss social and cultural topics.

The following aspects of French grammar are covered in FREN 200:
Unit 1: Le présent de l’indicatif ; les verbes pronominaux
Unit 2: L’article (défini, indéfini, partitif)
Unit 3: L’article partitif et les expressions de quantité
Unit 4: Les noms géographiques et leurs prépositions ; les nombres
Unit 5: L’impératif ; les pronoms personnels
Unit 6: Le passé composé
Unit 7: Le passé composé des verbes pronominaux ; l’accord du participe passé
Unit 8: L’imparfait ; la distinction entre le passé composé et l’imparfait
Unit 9: Le plus-que-parfait ; la distinction entre le passé composé, l’imparfait et le plus-que-parfait
Unit 10: Le pluriel des noms
Unit 11: Les adjectifs qualificatifs ; l’adverbe
Unit 12: Le comparatif et le superlatif ; le participe présent
Learning outcomes
After completing French 200, students should be able to:
- Apply sufficient vocabulary to hold a simple conversation about relationships and social and cultural issues.
- Pronounce French words accurately.
- Read short texts in French and demonstrate a good understanding of the content.
- Use a variety of French grammatical structures (present and past tenses, the imperative, present participle, prepositions, pronouns, adjectives, nouns, articles).
- Write grammatically correct sentences, paragraphs, and short compositions.
- Use dictionaries and online resources efficiently to find the meaning of words and expressions.
Evaluation
To receive credit for FREN 200, you must complete and submit the five written assignments, the five oral assignments, the composition assignment, the final oral examination, and the final online written examination. You must achieve a course composite grade of at least D (50 percent) and a grade of at least 50 percent on the online examination and the oral examination. The weighting of the course assignments is as follows:

The final examination for this course must be requested in advance and written under the supervision of an AU-approved exam invigilator. Invigilators include either ProctorU or an approved in-person invigilation centre that can accommodate online exams. Students are responsible for payment of any invigilation fees. Challenge for credit
Overview
The challenge for credit process allows you to demonstrate that you have acquired a command of the general subject matter, knowledge, intellectual and/or other skills that would normally be found in a university-level course.

Evaluation
To receive credit for the FREN 200 challenge registration, you must achieve a grade of at least D (50 percent)on the written examination. You must also demonstrate oral proficiency by reaching a satisfactory standard on the oral examination (telephone exam of approximately 15 minutes). The oral examination is to be completed first. It is marked as PASS/FAIL and no grade is assigned for the oral exam. You must pass the oral exam in order to continue with the challenge. The grade (percentage) for the written exam constitutes the grade for the challenge. The challenge process must be completed within a three-month period.
