Overview
The goal of this directed study course is to provide students an opportunity to engage with senior-level Accounting topics and to demonstrate the application of advanced Accounting concepts and skills not otherwise available via the university’s course offerings.
ACCT 499 is a directed study course. This means that:
- You will study independently under the supervision of a Faculty of Business faculty member.
- You and your supervisor may negotiate the nature and number of required assessments.
- You are required to negotiate support arrangements with your prospective supervisor, as no tutorial arrangements are automatically made.
You will notice that the emphasis is placed on your responsibilities. This course requires you to take responsibility for designing your own learning and to ensure that your own learning objectives will be met.
There is also an emphasis on collaboration between you and your prospective supervisor in determining your program of study.
Eligibility
ACCT 499 is available to Athabasca University students who meet the following criteria:
- enrolled in a relevant Athabasca University bachelor’s degree program,
- at a senior year level in their studies, and
- attained suitable knowledge and skillset in Accounting (as determined by the prospective supervisor).
Before enrolling, your first step is to create an initial proposal of one to two pages. Send the proposal to FB Support and it will be referred to the Undergraduate Program Director.
Enrollment is dependent upon the availability and agreement of a suitable Business faculty member to supervise the student. You and your supervisor must then agree upon the desired topic, scope, and timeframe of your study prior to your enrollment.
Outline
Your first assignment will likely be to prepare your study plan. This plan needs to cover these topics:
- aim and objectives of your study program
- support required from your supervisor
- support and resources required from Athabasca University Library
- other sources of support and learning resources if required
Your supervisor must approve your study plan before you continue your studies in this course. This is a very important assignment. It sets out your learning plan and builds a contract for learning between you and your supervisor.
Evaluation
You complete the course by submitting all the agreed assignments and obtaining a grade of C- (60 percent) or higher overall.
