Overview

Nursing 437: Professional Practice in Family Health Promotion is a paced online clinical course that provides opportunities to integrate theory and develop further skills related to family health promotion. Practice occurs in a variety of settings including community agencies and client homes. Each student’s placement is unique and grounded in the practice of the agency and clinical instructor or mentor as it evolves. Opportunities to apply family assessment skills and nursing intervention strategies in recognition of concepts outlined in the McGill Model are facilitated.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of NURS 437, students will achieve or exceed the following learning outcomes:

• Integrate concepts related to population health, primary health care and health promotion while working with diverse families;
• Integrate concepts outlined in the McGill Model and Friedman’s Family Assessment Model while carrying out the nursing process with family as client focus;
• Pose research questions that remain unanswered both in your personal learning and in the profession of family health nursing;
• Demonstrate professional nursing behaviour by practicing safely, using evidence based practice, clinical judgment, critical thinking, and innovation; and
• Comply with legal and ethical standards in nursing practice settings by incorporating clients’ values, beliefs, and rights within the mandate and the role of the profession, namely the AARN Nursing Practice Standards, the AARN Professional Boundaries and the CNA Code of Ethics.

Course Structure

Evaluation

NURS 437 is graded on a Pass/Fail basis. To receive credit for NURS 437, all clinical practice and assignment requirements must be successfully completed and submitted. Effective January 1, 2010, all papers submitted must follow the guidelines of the APA Publication Manual (6th ed.) (2010).

Course Materials

Textbooks

There are no required textbooks for NURS 437. It is expected that students will utilize textbook(s) from NURS 436 in NURS 437.

Other Materials

Students will receive an Access Letter in the course package with instructions for gaining access to this online course. A variety of electronic journals and web sites are used in the course and paper copies are not included in the course package.
