Overview
ACCT 355 will address the details of cost accumulation and product costing. It will also teach you how to measure and identify relevant costs for managerial decision making, planning, controlling, and measuring performance.
Learning outcomes
After you have completed this course, you should be able to
- discuss the role of management accounting in planning, control, and decision-making in an organization.
- define the terms and concepts used in identifying and classifying costs.
- demonstrate the use of cost-volume-profit analysis in decision-making and planning.
- apply methods focusing on cost accumulation and product costing for inventory valuation and income determination.
- understand and apply activity-based costing and the cost hierarchy approach in allocating costs to products and services.
- apply process costing using various costing methods, and distinguish and account for spoilage in process costing procedures.
- describe and apply various methods for estimating a cost function.
- compare and contrast variable costing and absorption costing, and prepare income statements using both methods.
- measure and identify relevant costs for different types of managerial decisions.
- discuss various methods for pricing products and services, and recommend a pricing strategy based on various considerations.
- identify and evaluate management of inventory through various methods.
Evaluation
To receive credit for this course, you must write a final examination and pass it with a grade of at least 50%. In addition, you must achieve a minimum overall course grade of D (50 percent). Any quizzes or assignments not submitted will receive a grade of 0%.

The final examination for this course must be requested in advance and written under the supervision of an AU-approved exam invigilator. Invigilators include either ProctorU or an approved in-person invigilation centre that can accommodate online exams. Students are responsible for payment of any invigilation fees. Note: Students planning to transfer this course to a Chartered Professional Accountant designation are advised that they will be required to achieve a grade higher than the minimum passing grade. See CPA Requirements for details.
