Mission statement

Athabasca University, Canada’s Open University, is dedicated to the removal of barriers that restrict access to, and success in, university-level studies and to increasing equality of educational opportunity for adult learners worldwide. We are committed to excellence in teaching, research and scholarship, and to being of service to the general public.

Preparatory courses (100 level) are designed to prepare students to undertake university-level study in certain disciplines that require some background knowledge at the high school level. Junior-level (200 level) courses are of academic rigor similar to first year courses in a traditional university. Senior-level (300 and 400 level) courses are those which assume a background of university learning or which have specific prerequisites in terms of introductory-level courses. Graduate-level courses are numbered 500, 600, and 700 (for reading, practicum, or project courses). Doctorate-level courses are numbered 800.

Effective date of information in the Calendar, unless otherwise noted, is September 1, 2025.
