First steps: how do I begin?
- Read all pages of the PLAR site carefully.
- Review the sample student e-Portfolios to see an example of the type of portfolio you will develop through the PLAR process.
- Refer to our list of frequently asked questions.
- You must apply for admission to your chosen Athabasca University undergraduate program first before pursuing PLAR.
- You must have official transcripts for all previous coursework submitted to Athabasca University, and wait for any potential transfer credits to be evaluated before further pursuing PLAR.
- Complete the PLAR self-assessment on our Am I PLAR ready? page.

- Discuss PLAR potential/suitability. Contact our office.
- Submit resume and DegreeWorks worksheet (program plan).
- Enter our mentoring queue (waitlist).
- Submit front-end pieces as directed.
- Enter our mentoring process.
- Revise front-end pieces as directed by a mentor.
- Submit the application form with payment as directed by a mentor.
- Finalized learning contract with a mentor.
- Follow mentor-provided resources and guidance to prepare a portfolio.
- Learn about the principles and theories that support portfolio development.
- Develop written learning statements that express your learning or cognitive processes related to academic program or course outcomes.
- Critically curate and organize a variety of types of evidence from your work experience to support your written learning claims.
- Submit a complete portfolio.
- Receive results once the assessment is completed.
