Lab schedules

Geography labs are completed with a "home lab kit," therefore you set your own schedule and pace. GEOG 265/266/302 home labs must be completed, however, by the course contract end-date.

Lab resources

  • The Earth Observing System Data Gateway (EDG) is a system for search and acquisition of earth science data products from NASA and affiliated centers. Some of these imagery data are free while others are available at a low cost.
  • GeoConnections provides access to geospatial data of Canada (GIS and remote sensing data) with a free access.
  • GeoGratis provides access to geospatial data of Canada (GIS and remote sensing data) with a free access.
  • The Global Land Cover Facility develops and distributes at no cost via FTP remotely sensed satellite data and products that explain land cover from the local to global scales.
  • Google Earth is a Digital Earth Program that allows a multi-resolution and three-dimensional digital representation of our planet, into which a vast collection of spatially referenced data is integrated (i.e. satellite images, aerial photographs, GIS vector data).
  • How Far Is It? - find out how far apart any two places are and see them on a map.
  • The NASA's Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) is a huge database holding more than 15,000 descriptions of Earth science data sets and services covering all aspects of Earth and environmental sciences.
  • National Atlas of Canada Online provides interactive mapping and teaching resources.
  • The National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) provides cryospheric data and other information gathered from such sources as remote sensing instruments, ground measurements, and models (i.e. snow and ice data as well as data on the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, oceans and land surfaces).
  • The Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) archives and distributes data relevant to the physical state of the ocean. Several satellite and sensors are available.
  • Windows Live Local is a Digital Earth Program that allows a multi-resolution and three-dimensional digital representation of our planet, into which a vast collection of spatially referenced data is integrated (i.e. satellite images, aerial photographs, GIS vector data).
  • World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D.
