The AU team and Athabasca community at large enjoyed an amazing and fun-filled day at our annual golf tournament on Sept. 13! The rain held off long enough so that we could drive, chip, put, hack, and wack our way through the gorgeous Athabasca Golf and Country Club (@athagolf)! Thank you to all our amazing volunteers for making this a truly memorable event like no other in our home community of Athabasca!

Judy Obee, Bachelor of General Studies student

"I learned a lot about the various forms of dementia and determined that a healthy lifestyle would be my best defence."

Judy Obee experienced the pain of watching both her parents suffer from dementia in their later years. This family history made her frightened for the future so she determinedly did everything she could to exercise her brain to stay sharp: playing computer games, Wordle, Sodoku, and jigsaw puzzles.

"I wanted something harder," Obee said.

So in 2018, at age 70 and 48 years after completing her undergrad in math, Obee enrolled in #AthabascaU's Bachelor of General Studies program. Online learning at AU not only allowed her to keep her mental faculties sharp, the flexibility of open learning allowed her to choose her own academic adventure taking courses in psychology, Spanish, economics, physics, statistics, finance, and more.

"In the six years since I started, I can claim that my cognitive abilities are just fine, because I am a straight-A student!"

Obee is now just a few months away from completing her degree and looks forward to joining the Class of 2025! Thank you, Judy, for sharing your inspiring story and proving that it's never too late to learn!
