Share your story for Transforming Lives: Learners of AU
Students and grads: Share how flexible, open, online learning has made an impact on your life and community
For more than 53 years, Athabasca University (AU) has helped Albertans and Canadians transform their lives through open, distance education.
As Canada’s only open and fully online university, AU removes the types of barriers that can prevent some from pursuing post-secondary education. Our students don’t have to leave their communities, quit their jobs, or change family commitments to pursue an education. They live, study, and work in every corner of our province, country and beyond, from major cities to rural, remote, or Indigenous communities.
But don’t take our word for it. Transforming Lives: Learners of AU is an ongoing series where real students and alumni share how AU’s flexible learning model made a difference in their lives and, in turn, the communities in which they live and work.
Share your story!
If you are an AU student or alum, we want to hear your story—and help celebrate your accomplishments. We’re looking for:
- A 400- to 600-word personal essay outlining why you chose AU, how our flexibility allowed you to achieve your education goals without sacrificing family life, work, or personal commitments. We would also love to know a bit about what you have planned for your future!
- Provide us with 3-4 photos of yourself that we can include in your story to share on social media. Take a selfie in your favourite study spot, with those you love and care about, or somewhere in your community. AU students live all over Alberta and Canada and we’d love to see where you call home!
- Photo tips: if you’re taking a selfie, face a light source (natural light is nice) and avoid distracting backgrounds or wearing sunglasses or hats that obstruct your face or create shadows. Show a genuine smile—chin up, eyes down—and try to keep your phone steady!
Each writer of a published article will receive AU swag! In keeping with AU’s flexibility, there is no deadline to enter!
