Applying to take Nursing and Health Studies courses as a non-program student

Those who are not admitted to a graduate program in the Faculty of Health Disciplines may be permitted to register in select courses, space permitting. The non-program option is appropriate for prospective students who are not ready to commit to being a program student or visiting students from other institutions. Visiting students may be able to take courses via the Western Dean’s agreement. This agreement supports students who are enrolled in Master’s level studies at a participating institution, and/or to those who have already completed a counselling-related Master's level degree (or higher) who are in the process of applying for licensure or professional registration.

Courses taken as a non-program student can be applied towards graduate program requirements if/when a student becomes a program student. Grades on courses completed as a non-program student will be considered in the admission process. However, successful completion of courses as a non-program student does not guarantee admission.

Non-program student application deadlines

The following are deadlines to apply as a non-program student:

  • May 15 for Fall session courses (September to December)
  • Sep. 15 for Winter session courses (January to April)
  • Jan. 15 for Spring session courses (May to August)

Late applications are not assessed or retained for future consideration.

Application process

Before starting your application, please verify that you meet any admission requirements for your chosen courses, as outlined in the FHD Graduate Calendar.

Complete all components of the application by the deadline and pay the application fee. You can log into your application and update your information at any time during the application process. However, once you finalize and submit your application for review, it cannot be modified.

Important: If you have been a student at Athabasca University (AU) or have received an AU student ID number as part of a previous application, please include this ID number in your current application.

Please check your student application for updates.

After you have been approved as a non-program student, you will receive an email from the Faculty of Health Disciplines. This will contain instructions regarding registration confirmation, course access, course materials, withdrawal procedures, fees, and other relevant details.
