Dr. Caroline Buzanko named 2024 Psychologist of the Year by the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta

Dr. Caroline Buzanko, a registered psychologist and assistant professor in the Faculty of Health Disciplines, has been named the 2024 Psychologist of the Year by the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta.

The award celebrates excellent work in the field of psychology.

With nearly three decades of clinical experience supporting children, teens, and their families, Buzanko’s research focuses on children’s mental health, resilience, and anxiety.

“Receiving this award is an incredible affirmation of everything I have poured into my life’s work,” she said.

“It is so validating to know that my efforts to improve children’s emotional resilience are making a real difference. This recognition assures me that I am on the right path.”

The award acknowledges achievements and contributions over the previous two years. Buzanko said she is most proud of the global workshops she has conducted on emotional resilience. The sessions provide an opportunity to connect with thousands of other professionals, educators, families, and even young people.

“These connections are what make the biggest difference in promoting emotional resilience, far more than any article could ever achieve, and are the most rewarding aspects of my work.”

“Among her peers, this award recognizes Caroline’s dedication and commitment to her profession where she has over 25 years of experience supporting families and working with children and teens with attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD) disorder and anxiety,” said Dr. Steven Johnson, dean of the faculty.

“Students in the Master of Counselling program at AU will continue to benefit from the training and approaches that Dr. Buzanko brings to the program.”
