Welcome to the AU Math Centre
This Centre is designed to be of help to those making the transition from school-level to university-level mathematics. Before beginning your journey through this learning site, think a little bit about what you want to achieve during your visit.
Multiple Avenues of Entry
If you don’t know where to begin, try our Diagnostic Test. That will give you some direction and a starting point for your studies. Remember that it is not where you embark on your self-improvement journey that is of note; it is how much you achieve and the port of arrival that is of the essence. Think of this every time you tend to become discouraged. Just keep going.
If you are looking for help on a specific topic, check out our major Topics List. Over time, this list will grow, so check back occasionally if your particular area of interest is not currently available for extra study.
For those who prefer some guidance before getting acquainted with the site, read through the discussion below on Mapping Your Learning Strategy'.
Mapping Your Learning Strategy
How to Use These Materials: These learning materials have been developed for those who may just need a refresher program or for those who require an extensive and in depth background in mathematical foundations. You are not obligated to read or listen to a tutorial from beginning to end. You may skip over discussions not of interest or relevance to your particular learning objectives. Exercises and self-tests, generated through a dynamic creation of typical types of questions, are provided for endless and repetitive practice if that is how you learn best. However, no one insists that each of these be fully completed before proceeding. In this venue, marks are not important. Understanding is. So go through the materials/exercises often enough so that the ideas begin to gel in your mind. Repetition forms the stratified groundwork which lays a solid foundation of understanding for future studies.”
Topical Issues: Each topic page generally opens with either an historical vignette or a comment on the relevance of the topic in the larger scheme of mathematical thought. There is a drop-down menu to guide you from background information you may need, to one or more tutorials about the ideas under discussion, leading to a chance to test your mastery of them, and finally to a list of follow up topics requiring the skills just acquired. Some of the tutorials are in both a READ and an audio-supported LISTEN format. The PRACTISE and TEST icons lead to exercises and a way to test yourself on the material covered in that particular tutorial. All the materials are interactive in the sense that you are in control of your own pace of learning and may stop or start or enter or leave at any juncture. Run times of the animated tutorials are provided for information only.
Maple TA Assessment Tool: PRACTICE EXERCISES are available through a third-party assessment tool. They are more than just multiple choice or multiple selection questions. For this reason, you may wish to watch the DEMO we have produced regarding becoming accustomed to inputting your answers using this powerful piece of mathematical software. It is not difficult. Some may find it self-explanatory, but for those who need a few hints on how to proceed, please spend a few minutes watching it. It may save you a lot of time in the end.
Maple TA Assessment Tool Access: To obtain access to the online practice Maple TA exercises, please subscribe again to the AU Math Centre with your request inserted in the Message section.
Other online resources which may be helpful for studying these materials are:
- Graph a function “Graph is an open source application used to draw mathematical graphs in a coordinate system. Anyone who wants to draw graphs of functions will find this program useful. The program makes it very easy to visualize a function and paste it into another program. It is also possible to do some mathematical calculations on the functions.”
- Desmos Graphing Calculator “Explore math with our beautiful, free online graphing calculator. Graph functions, plot points, visualize algebraic equations, add sliders, animate graphs,”
- Desmos Scientific Calculator “All the computational power of our graphing calculator, just without the graph”
- Trigonometry Calculators This site gives an array of calculators used in the study of Trigoometry. Courtesy of Furey, Edward "Trigonometry Calculators" at https://www.calculatorsoup.com/calculators/trigonometry/index.php from CalculatorSoup, https://www.calculatorsoup.com - Online Calculators
