Exploring the lived experience of dying and death for mature minors in Canada.

Overview

A research assistant is needed to support Dr. Lamb’s national research study exploring the meaning of dying and death for mature minors in Canada.

Specific activities include but are not limited to

Interviewing child, adolescent and adult populations on the meaning that dying and death hold for mature minors, their families and caregivers. Interviews will be conducted in person or online. The successful candidate must be able to travel and be flexible to interviewing participants on short notice. The primary job duties for the field research assistant (RA-3) will include participation in training; co-conducting supervised interviews initially and then conducting interviews independently (unless otherwise qualified). The research activities may also include assisting with data analysis and dissemination strategies including co-publication opportunities.

The successful candidate will work with, and directly report to, Dr. Christina Lamb at Athabasca University. Dr. Lamb will provide some training for the interviews including the underlying methodology and interviewing sessions that will be required.

The job duties for position (Research Assistant RA-3) include, but are not limited to

  • Experience working in pediatric healthcare settings and preferably working with dying children, their families and healthcare providers.
  • A robust awareness and knowledge of ethics: this is required. The potential RA must have knowledge and experience related to conducting human subject research in line with Tri-Council research policies.
  • Experience with Interpretive Phenomenological research methodology
  • Experience interviewing children
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • The ability to consistently work flexible hours which may include funded travel across Canada.
  • The ability to speak French (preferred) to translate interviews and other aspects of the study
  • Strong critical thinking skills to be able to independently assess and determine how to safely and ethically conduct interviews across Canada in a variety of settings.

 

The successful candidate will work with, and directly report to, Dr. Christina Lamb Faculty of Health Disciplines at Athabasca University. Dr. Lamb provides training and support for this position.

Qualifications

  • Must have experience conducting research interviews (in person and / or online)
  • Preference for applicants with experience working with children
  • Preference for bilingual applicants
  • Have taken an Advanced Qualitative Research Course
  • Must have an ethics background: preference for candidates who have conducted human subject research
  • Able to complete tasks to a high standard and in a consistent and timely manner
  • Previous research dissemination experience
  • Can work from home, as all activities are in a virtual environment, including weekly Teams meetings
  • Committed to adhering to the highest standards of ethics for research with human subjects and storing and use of sensitive data
