Andrew McLellan is a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and Assistant Professor in the Master of Nursing – Nurse Practitioner (MN–NP) program at Athabasca University. He holds a Doctor of Nursing, a Master of Science in Nursing with a focus on Primary Health Care (PHC), and an International Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance.

Andrew maintains active clinical practice in primary care and has extensive experience working with underserved and marginalized populations in Canada and internationally. His academic and professional work spans nursing education, health systems strengthening, and the design and evaluation of PHC-oriented health systems.

He has held academic appointments across Canada and sub-Saharan Africa and most recently served as a consultant with the World Health Organization’s Special Programme on Primary Health Care (Evidence and Innovation Unit). In this role, he led the development, implementation, and evaluation of a global PHC leadership course engaging participants from over 70 countries, supporting curriculum design, facilitator development, and applied learning for policy and system transformation.

Andrew’s scholarly interests include participatory and implementation-focused research, competency-based education, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. His work emphasizes relational engagement, compassionate leadership, and the translation of evidence into practice and policy. He is particularly interested in how primary care teams, especially nurses and nurse practitioners, contribute to equitable, integrated, cost effective, and people-centred health systems.
