International travel

When travelling internationally it is important to ensure your use of your AU provided smart phone and cellular plan aligns with all policies and procedures, including the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Assets Procedure. Our standard plans only cover Travel within Canada.

Cellular bills can quickly increase by hundreds or thousands of dollars when travelling abroad. Having an appropriate travel plan in place can limit these costs substantially. If your phone is powered on outside of Canada it can easily generate additional costs even if you are not actively using it for anything.

If you will be required to use your AU smart phone when travelling internationally for university related teaching, learning, research, and/or administration, you must contact IT to ensure you have an appropriate travel plan in place well before you plan to leave. (See section 4.4a of the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Assets Procedure.)

Limited personal use of an AU asset like your AU smart phone is allowed, provided the use aligns with the procedure, where one of the requirements is it does not increase the University’s cost. (Section 4.4b or the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Assets Procedure.) Use of cellular services (data/voice/text) outside of Canada will almost certainly generate costs for the university.
