Why was online learning at Athabasca University the right fit for you?

Online learning at Athabasca University was the right fit because of the flexibility it provided, allowing me to balance my studies with a full-time career and personal commitments. Active engagement with both peers and professors was a core part of the program, creating a dynamic and collaborative learning experience. That balance of flexibility and structured interaction allowed me to succeed without compromising academic rigour or my professional responsibilities.

How has studying at AU helped you achieve your goals (personal, professional, academic)?

Throughout my career, I was fortunate to achieve rewarding opportunities and leadership roles despite not having a university degree. Still, the absence of formal education lingered in the background and often contributed to feelings of imposter syndrome.

Pursuing the MBA was a personal goal—to address that doubt and reaffirm my capabilities. Completing the program has given me a stronger sense of confidence and legitimacy in my leadership role. It has also opened new doors and positioned me well for the next chapter of my professional journey, where I’m ready to take on greater challenges and opportunities.

What obstacles have you had to overcome to pursue your education? How did you overcome them?

A significant challenge was overcoming the self-doubt tied to not having a university degree. The MBA program pushed me to confront those doubts head-on. Each assignment, discussion, and milestone reinforced that I was more than capable. Support from my professors, peers, and my husband played an important role in helping me stay motivated throughout the journey.

How do you balance your studies with other responsibilities like work or family?

Balancing my studies with work was manageable because of the program’s flexibility and the direct relevance of the coursework to my professional role. I was able to apply new concepts and strategies at work in real time, which strengthened both my performance and my learning. At the same time, my professional experience added valuable context to my studies, making the academic work practical, engaging, and results-driven.

Who is your biggest cheerleader that helps you stay focused on your goals?

My biggest cheerleader has been my husband. His unwavering support and encouragement helped me stay focused, especially during the more challenging moments. Whether it was offering reassurance or celebrating milestones, he was always there to remind me why I started and to keep pushing forward. Having someone believe in you truly makes a difference.

What’s your favourite course?

My favourite course was Developing Leaders (RDLD 680). It challenged me to reflect deeply on my leadership style and personal growth while reaffirming my core values. The residency week strengthened my connections with peers and fostered a strong sense of community. The course’s focus on emotional intelligence, trust-building, and leading in complex environments continues to shape how I approach leadership and professional relationships.

How is your AU education different than what you've experienced previously? (a.k.a. How is AU like no other?)

Athabasca University’s long-standing expertise in online education created a seamless and supportive learning environment. The emphasis on practical, real-world application set AU apart. I could apply course concepts directly to my job, making the learning immediately relevant and impactful. That combination of flexibility, meaningful engagement, and real-world learning is what truly made AU like no other.
