Why was online learning at Athabasca University the right fit for you?
I was 30 years old when I decided it was time to pursue a Master of Counselling. However, with adult responsibilities, I knew I would not be able to attend traditional classes like I did when I completed my undergraduate degree.
I was thrilled to learn about Athabasca University and the opportunity to earn a master's degree through distance learning. I did not know for sure that I would be accepted or what the experience would be like, but I knew that if I was going to return to school, this was the most accessible way for me to do so.
Only after beginning my courses did I learn how much I thrive in a semi-independent online environment. I discovered many new strengths that I was previously unaware of, and my confidence has soared as a result of the structure, discipline, and critical thinking that are required throughout the AU learning design.
How has studying at AU helped you achieve your goals (personal, professional, academic)?
I could not be happier with the quality of education I received through AU! The faculty and curriculum are impeccable. Not only have I acquired valuable knowledge, skills, and new perspectives, but I have also undergone personal and professional transformations, adopting new ways of thinking. I am genuinely proud of the values I hold and the integrity with which I live my life, personally and professionally, as a result of my graduate education and experience.

What obstacles have you had to overcome to pursue your education? How did you overcome them?
I will not say that it has been easy! Obtaining my graduate degree will be one of the most challenging and rewarding endeavours I have undertaken. I have made financial, personal, and professional sacrifices. I have leaned heavily on the support of my partner, peers, colleagues, instructors, mentors, friends, and family. I have had to prioritize my mental and physical well-being and keep my long-term goals in mind.
How do you balance your studies with other responsibilities like work or family?
Finding a balance is difficult, and it does not always appear or feel equally balanced. On one hand, it required a lot of discipline, planning, and developing a highly proactive work ethic to achieve success. However, I also had to ensure that I took time for myself and didn't push myself too hard, neglecting my relationships and other responsibilities.
Sometimes this meant finding acceptance in a B-plus instead of an A-plus. Sometimes it meant taking time off work when I felt I needed to. Sometimes I needed to ask for more support or understanding from my family. Above all, I had to be gentle with myself throughout the process, forgive myself for my shortcomings, and take what I learned each time I moved forward.
What's your favourite course?
Tough one! GCAP 632 – Professional Ethics was my favorite course!
What are your plans for the future, after completing your AU program?
I look forward to being a clinical counsellor or registered psychologist focused in treatment of addictions.
How is your AU education different than what you've experienced previously? (a.k.a. How is AU like no other?)
I was amazed at the transformative learning that occurred from the comfort and convenience of my own home. Further, I maintained a professional career and became a mom while I studied—which was a huge deal for me.
