Bachelor of Arts, Sociology Major

Why was online learning at Athabasca University the right fit for you?

I work full time, so having a flexible education option available to me was crucial. AU allows me to fit my studies into my life comfortably and effortlessly. It also saves me time and money since I do not have to commute for classes.

How has studying at AU helped you achieve your goals (personal, professional, academic)?

Through AU’s online format, I’ve been able to keep pursuing my career goals by continuing to work full time and creating content on the side. I don’t have to choose between my professional and academic careers—both are thriving! Plus, having a more flexible education schedule allows me to keep my goal of trying new skill. Lately, this means spending my extra free time on cosplaying!

What obstacles have you had to overcome to pursue your education? How did you overcome them?

I was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) toward the end of high school. Athabasca University’s Accessibility Services have provided great support for my learning disability.

How do you balance your studies with other responsibilities like work or family?

I like to plan out my studies in blocks to give my routine some stability. At the beginning of each month, I sit down, check my course calendar, and plan out which assignments I need to complete day by day, even giving myself my own due dates. This helps me get my studies under control when I feel overwhelmed.

Who is your biggest cheerleader that helps you stay focused on your goals?

My family have been very supportive. I am also very lucky to work where I do, as my manager is flexible. She really helps me balance working alongside my studies. I am so grateful for her support.

What's your favourite course?

I have really enjoyed Religious Studies 211: Death and Dying in World Religions (RELS 211).

What are your plans for the future, after completing your AU program?

I hope to earn my master’s degree in library and information studies. Working in a library would be an absolute dream.

How is your AU education different than what you've experienced previously? (a.k.a. How is AU like no other?)

AU provides flexibility that I had not encountered from any other university. I feel like I am truly in control of my studies, and there has been no judgment along the way. All students are welcome, regardless of where they are on their educational journey.
