Why was online learning at Athabasca University the right fit for you?
I find that I prefer to be self-directed and learn in my own space at home. I find it easier to focus. Studying online allows me to do that while also providing opportunities for self-care, and a work-study-life balance that I could not do if I had to study in person.
How has studying at AU helped you achieve your goals (personal, professional, academic)?
Studying at AU has been remarkably expansive for me! So many of the courses have really inspired me and helped me adjust how I view my social justice roles. I have been really happy with courses that focus on Indigenous perspectives, and enjoy assignments that are more flexible and allow me to show what I am learning beyond an essay while reflecting on myself as a person, as a student and as a future practitioner in the counselling or helping profession.
What obstacles have you had to overcome to pursue your education? How did you overcome them?
For me, the impact of being the first in my family to attend university, as well as always having had to work full time were obstacles to pursuing a degree. The mindset needed to break those cycles requires a lot of balance, negotiation, commitment, and courage. Overcoming them was possible through strong social supports and relationships, and by envisioning my goals and then taking small steps to implement them. It’s also helpful to know that there is time—it's never too late to go back to school!
How do you balance your studies with other responsibilities like work or family?
It can be really hard some days to maintain balance, but I have found it’s essential to always attend to self-care. Short walks, exercise, nourishing foods, and breaks to do something fun, laugh, or rest ensure that I have the inner resources to keep going. I also schedule activities, block off chunks of time for studying or work, and plan weeks ahead so I can limit those moments of overwhelm and stress.
Who is your biggest cheerleader that helps you stay focused on your goals?
My husband always encourages me and helps me celebrate wins and milestones. Those small celebrations remind me about how all the hard work leads to positive results and is worth it.
What are you plans for the future, after completing your AU program?
Masters of Counselling program and then working as a counsellor!
How is your AU education different than what you've experienced previously? (a.k.a. How is AU like no other?)
AU is like no other due to the flexible options in studying and completing degrees. Also, the Indigenous courses and teachers are amazing.
