Why was online learning at Athabasca University the right fit for you?

Earning a university degree has been a goal for several years. I was accepted into a bachelor of education program at 18, but financial circumstances led me to pursue a two-year early education certificate instead.

Now, as a full-time education assistant, wife and mother of two, I knew I needed a flexible option that would allow me to work toward my degree while supporting my family. Athabasca University was my first choice because I could study at my own pace and fit my education around my life. My dad also took courses through AU while I was a teenager, so I knew firsthand that it could work for a busy adult.

How do you balance your studies with other responsibilities like work or family?
My children are 12 and 14, and between their competitive sports and music lessons, they have about 15 hours of activities each week. My laptop comes with me to soccer fields, gymnastics, and music studios, allowing me to study while supporting my children.

I also do a lot of my coursework after they go to bed and dedicate weekend mornings to my studies. I fit my education into the spaces between work and family commitments.

Who is your biggest cheerleader that helps you stay focused on your goals?
My parents and children are my biggest cheerleaders. My dad and I have conversations about my studies, while my mom is always encouraging me and reminding me that I can do this.

My children are my biggest motivation. I want to show them that it's never too late to pursue your goals. Even a hug from my daughter when I'm stressed or a “good luck on your exam, Mom,” from my son gives me the support I need to keep going.

What's your favourite course?
My favourite Ed Psych course so far was EDPY 351: Inclusive Education for Students With Diverse Needs.

What are your plans for the future, after completing your AU program?
After completing my Bachelor of Arts, I plan to pursue a master's degree in occupational therapy at the University of Alberta. Working alongside occupational therapists in an early education program has shown me that I want to continue supporting students in a school environment.

It will take time to reach my career goals, but I'm determined to get there.

How is your AU education different than what you've experienced previously? (a.k.a. How is AU like no other?)
I love having the flexibility to work at my own pace. I can adjust my course load when life gets busy or take on more when I have the capacity.

For example, my two current courses are assignment-based, without final exams, which gives me more flexibility during my children's busy spring sports season. AU allows me to work toward my goals while balancing work and family and paying for courses individually also helps make my education more affordable.
