Byron Nelson reappointed to chair AU's Board of Governors for a second three-year term
On Aug. 20, the Government of Alberta announced that Byron Nelson has been reappointed as Board Chair of the Board of Governors of Athabasca University for a second three-year term.
Byron Nelson has brought to this key role a wealth of experience and leadership across public, private, and voluntary sectors, overseeing among many achievements as board chair: renewed fiscal and operational stability, the re-building of trust and relationships with key interest-holders, the rejuvenation of our campus in Athabasca, and AU’s largest ever convocation, held once again in Athabasca in June 2025.
Dr. Alex Clark, president of Athabasca University, is excited to continue his work with Board Chair Nelson. “With our new strategic plan, Like No Other, and AU firmly grounded in our home community of Athabasca, the years ahead will be pivotal to realizing AU’s highest contribution to learners and communities near and far. As we meet and adapt together to the challenges of the future, I am delighted AU continues to benefit from Chair Nelson’s steadfast commitment to accessible and open education, his energy, and wise leadership.”
Byron Nelson has served as AU Board Chair since 2022. He received his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Wales, Cardiff, and is an alumnus of the University of Calgary. A past board member of Food Banks Alberta for six years, he received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for his contributions to adult education.
On his reappointment, Mr. Nelson shared, "I am beyond thrilled to be re-appointed to a second term as Chair of the Board of Governors of Athabasca University.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of the past three years and celebrate the changes and improvements that the team at AU has accomplished.
"AU’s successes have not come without hard work and long hours, but it is important to note that they were accomplished as a team.
"I cannot predict what the next three years will look like, what hurdles will be placed before us, or what challenges we will face, but I look forward to facing them with the Board of Governors, President Alex Clark, the senior leadership team and all other AU team members, along with the continued support of the town and county governments and the local community.
"I look forward to continuing to serve as AU Chair for the next three years."
