Student Social Insurance Number FAQs

Due to changes from the Canada Revenue Agency, Athabasca University (AU) is now required to collect Social Insurance Numbers (SIN) for the production of T2202 tax forms (to replace the former T2202A form).

AU is not making any outbound calls asking for your personal information. The only way to submit your SIN is through your secure myAU account and the secure form found there.

The following information will help to understand how this change will affect you.

A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a 9-digit number issued by the Government of Canada to administer government programs and benefits, including the administration of taxes.

The Government of Canada's website provides an overview of SINs and how they can be used.

Starting in the 2019 tax year, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requires all Designated Educational Institutions (DEIs), including Athabasca University, to include a student's SIN on the T2202 certificate.

The T2202 is an official income tax receipt issued by designated educational institutions for tuition, education, and textbook tax credits.

For 2019, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has re-numbered form T2202A to form T2202. You can learn more about the change on the CRA's website.

Log into your myAU account. You will then find a title on the left-hand side: “Manage your Student Record.” Click into the change personal information link.

If your SIN is already entered, you will get a green box that tells you no need to enter.

If it’s missing, you will be prompted to enter your SIN.

You will only be prompted for a SIN if we do not have one on file for you. Once you have submitted your SIN, you won’t be prompted again. To access the secure system for entering your SIN, please see question above.

AU is asking for your SIN to be submitted through your MyAU account. Any other website, service, or message asking you to share your SIN via email may be a phishing scheme. If you have any additional questions, please contact us here.

We use industry-standard 256-bit SSL encryption to transmit any SIN data. Access to SIN data is strictly limited to a small number of AU team members who require direct access in their role at the university. Our websites and databases are regularly audited by external auditors to ensure that we are following current best practices in digital security.
