Mathematics (MATH) 215

Overview

MATH 215 gives students a working knowledge and understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics and how statistics is applied in the sciences, social sciences, and business.

Course Objectives

After completing this course, you should be able to

1. organize, summarize, and display data in a meaningful way;
2. compute various measures of centre, variability and position of data sets.
3. apply basic rules of probability to calculate likelihoods of random events.
4. use appropriate probability distributions to estimate and test hypotheses about parameters of single and multiple populations.
5. perform goodness-of-fit tests and analyse cross-tabulated data.
6. use linear correlation and regression methods to analyse relationships in bivariate data.

Evaluation

To receive credit for MATH 215, you must achieve a mark of at least 50 per cent on each of the following: the midterm examination, the final examination and achieve a composite course grade of at least D (50 percent). The weighting of the composite grade is as follows:

Special Course Features

Students must have a scientific calculator, that is, one that can at least perform square roots and exponential operations. Be aware that no programmable calculators nor graphing calculators with installed statistical applications may be taken into the exam rooms.

Challenge Evaluation

To receive credit for the MATH 215 challenge registration, you must complete the two parts of the challenge exam and achieve a minimum grade of at least D (50 percent) on Part II and a course composite grade of at least D (50 percent). The two parts of the exam must be written either on the same day, or on two consecutive days.
