Mathematics Diagnostic Assessment. This online test contains 70 questions that will help you assess your mathematical skills. Based on your score we will recommend which Athabasca University mathematics course you are likely ready to take successfully.

Delivery Mode: Individualized study online with eTextbook or Grouped Study

Credits: 3

Area of Study: Science

Prerequisite: None. However, fundamental mathematical skills are required, particularly the ability to do algebra. Textbooks on basic mathematics are available at the Athabasca University Library. MATH 100 (a non-credit course) is suitable preparation for taking MATH 215, for those students concerned about their mathematical background.

Precluded Course: MGSC 301 and MATH 216 (MATH 215 may not be taken for credit if credit has already been obtained for MGSC 301 or MATH 216.)

Faculty: Faculty of Science & Technology

Centre: Centre for Science

MATH 215 has a Challenge for Credit option.

Overview

MATH 215 gives students a working knowledge and understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics and how statistics is applied in the sciences, social sciences, and business.

Course Objectives

After completing this course, you should be able to

  1. organize, summarize, and display data in a meaningful way;
  2. compute various measures of centre, variability and position of data sets.
  3. apply basic rules of probability to calculate likelihoods of random events.
  4. use appropriate probability distributions to estimate and test hypotheses about parameters of single and multiple populations.
  5. perform goodness-of-fit tests and analyse cross-tabulated data.
  6. use linear correlation and regression methods to analyse relationships in bivariate data.

Outline

  • Unit 1: Descriptive Statistics
  • Unit 2: Probability
  • Unit 3: Probability Distributions
  • Unit 4: Estimation and Tests of Hypotheses for One Population
  • Unit 5: Estimation and Tests of Hypotheses for Two or More Populations
  • Unit 6: Bivariate Analysis

Evaluation

To receive credit for MATH 215, you must achieve a mark of at least 50 per cent on each of the following: the midterm examination, the final examination and achieve a composite course grade of at least D (50 percent). The weighting of the composite grade is as follows:

Activity Weighting
6 Assignments (3 1/3% each) 20%
Midterm Exam 40%
Final Exam 40%
Total 100%

Textbooks

Registration in this course includes electronic textbooks. For more information on electronic textbooks, please refer to the eText Initiative site.

Mann, Prem S. Introductory Statistics, 8th ed., NJ: Wiley, 2013.

Sawyer, Julia K. Student Solution Manual: Introductory Statistics, Prem S. Mann, 8th ed., NJ: Wiley, 2013.

A print version of the eTexts may be available for purchase from the publisher through a direct-to-student link provided on the course website; you can also acquire the textbooks on your own if you wish.

The online course materials also include a Student Manual, Study Guide, Assignment Manual, and Summary.

Note:The eTextbook(s) may be downloaded on your device with an option to print its content. If you desire a hard-copy of the text, you may order one at a discounted price from the Direct-to-Student (DTS) site for Athabasca students.

Special Course Features

Students must have a scientific calculator, that is, one that can at least perform square roots and exponential operations. Be aware that no programmable calculators nor graphing calculators with installed statistical applications may be taken into the exam rooms.

Challenge for Credit Overview

The Challenge for Credit process allows you to demonstrate that you have acquired a command of the general subject matter, knowledge, intellectual and/or other skills that would normally be found in a university-level course.

Full information about Challenge for Credit can be found in the Undergraduate Calendar.

Challenge Evaluation

To receive credit for the MATH 215 challenge registration, you must complete the two parts of the challenge exam and achieve a minimum grade of at least D (50 percent) on Part II and a course composite grade of at least D (50 percent). The two parts of the exam must be written either on the same day, or on two consecutive days.

Activity Weighting
Part 1: Exam 50%
Part 2: Exam 50%
Total 100%
