Overview

HRMT 387 is designed to complement HRMT/ORGB 386: Introduction to Human Resource Management, or a similar introductory course offered by another college or university. It is therefore not designed to cover all human resource management or employee relations issues addressed in such courses. Before starting this course, you should have taken HRMT/ORGB 386 or an equivalent course.

This course makes extensive use of Canadian Human Resource Management (11th ed.) by H. Schwind, K. Uggerslev, T. Wagar, N. Fassina, and J. Bulmash, a text that provides an accessible, comprehensive guide to the field. This is the latest edition of the series focusing on the key aspects of strategic human resource management with particular attention to the Canadian context. The text stresses upon the strategic contribution of the HR function in contemporary organizations while also focusing explicitly upon the relationship between HR strategies, tactics, and systems. The text contains case studies of Canadian organizations, thereby improving your practical knowledge and awareness of HR issues prevailing in the country.

Outline

The course is divided into three units.

  • Unit 1: Human Resource Management - A Strategic Perspective
  • Unit 2: Managing Employee Performance
  • Unit 3: Managing Employee Relations and International Human Resource Management

Evaluation

To receive credit for HRMT 387, you must receive a grade of 50 percent or better on the final examination, and achieve an overall grade of at least D (50%) for the entire course. Your final grade is determined by a weighted average of the grades you receive on the activities listed below.
