Prerequisite: Post-LPN: ENGL 255 and PHIL 152 recommended. Athabasca University at Mount Royal College (Calgary, AB): Nursing 2202 and Nursing 2203 recommended.

Precluded course: HLST 320 cannot be taken for credit if credit has already been obtained for HLST 482.

HLST 320 Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals introduces the principles and theories of teaching and learning within a health context. Through a variety of activities students learn how to assess the teaching-learning environment, develop a teaching plan, apply specific teaching strategies and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching. Students apply teaching and learning concepts, theories and principles through the completion of a teaching project. Critical assessment of teaching resources is also a component of HLST 320. By the completion of this course students have a beginning understanding of the complexities and realities of health teaching from a personal and theoretical perspective.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of HLST 320, the student will achieve or exceed the following learning outcomes:

  • Critically assess teaching-learning resources;
  • Apply the teaching-learning process to a health-related situation in a systematic manner that reflects the principles of teaching and learning presented in this course; and
  • Describe the complexities and realities of health teaching from a personal and theoretical perspective.

To receive credit for HLST 320, students must complete all of the required assignments and achieve a composite grade of at least “C-” (60 percent) and pass the personal assessment exercise. All papers submitted must follow the guidelines of the APA Publication Manual (5th ed.)( 2001).

The assignments and weighting of the composite grade is as follows:
