Why was online learning at Athabasca University the right fit for you?
Online learning at Athabasca University allows me to homeschool my son while pursuing my own educational dreams. His diverse learning needs made traditional school very difficult, so it was important for me to support his learning at home while also working toward my own goals.

How has studying at AU helped you achieve your goals?
Studying with AU has helped me rediscover my goal of becoming a psychologist. As a mom, my goals are often put on hold, but AU has made it possible for me to achieve more than I ever imagined.

What obstacles have you had to overcome to pursue your education? How did you overcome them?
I overcome obstacles every day. Being a parent to a child with exceptional needs—and being their educator—creates a unique and constantly changing experience. Staying flexible, adaptable, and ready for anything is essential to keeping up with my course load and responsibilities.

How do you balance your studies with other responsibilities like work or family?
Balance is always changing. Some days it’s easier to accomplish everything, and other days I must let things go. I focus on my priorities and try to give each one the time it deserves. I’ve learned when I need to step away from coursework and when I need to carve out focused time to study. Having a supportive husband and family makes a big difference.

Who is your biggest cheerleader?
My son. He’s seven and loves that we can work on our schoolwork together. He dreams of becoming a scientist or engineer and knowing he’s watching me keeps me focused on my goals.

What is your favourite course?
Education Psychology (EDPY) 200.

What are your plans for the future after completing your AU program?
I plan to apply to a master’s program in counselling.

How is your AU education different from what you have experienced previously?
Freedom, flexibility, and ease. The tutors and staff are helpful and kind, and the courses are easy to navigate. Being able to create my own schedule makes AU my favourite educational experience.
