Why was online learning at Athabasca University the right fit for you?
I began studying while overseas and during the COVID-19 pandemic, so online learning was ideal.
What obstacles have you had to overcome to pursue your education? How did you overcome them?
My biggest obstacle was myself. I never thought I was smart enough to obtain a master’s degree, but when I was trapped in a small apartment during the COVID lockdown (I was in Kuwait and it was a total lockdown for 6 weeks) I had time to reflect and decided to give it a try. I was very surprised when not only was I successful but how much I loved the program.
How do you balance your studies with other responsibilities like work or family?
I have the discipline necessary to do online learning. I schedule time and stick to the schedule. I found going to Starbucks on Saturdays was a great way to get a lot of work done. No distractions, like "oh I'll just throw another load of laundry in."
Who is your biggest cheerleader that helps you stay focused on your goals?
When I began in Kuwait, two of my friends were also taking courses (from different schools in different countries) but we would get together and do our course work together, especially at the coffee shop. We kept each other motivated and on task. We were sounding boards for each other.
What's your favourite course?
MAIS 620: Digital Storytelling is close to my heart because it was during that course I wrote my first children's book. I’m so proud of it!
What are your plans for the future, after completing your AU program?
I want to continue studying and to become a published author, beginning with children's books and moving onto novels.
How is your AU education different than what you've experienced previously? (a.k.a. - How is AU like no other?)
The flexibility is the best!
