Why was online learning at Athabasca University the right fit for you?
Balancing my full-time job with my responsibilities as a father made me realize that in-person classes would not fit my busy life. I currently work on a remote construction project with a 14/7 rotation outside my home province, which adds another layer of complexity to my schedule.
While searching for a university that offered an online MBA program, I discovered Athabasca University. Its commitment to accommodating students like me immediately stood out, and its longstanding reputation aligned perfectly with my aspirations.
My first course exceeded my expectations, and I am excited to continue this journey.
How has studying at AU helped you achieve your goals?
I am grateful for the transformative impact this program is having on my life. It is broadening my perspective and strengthening my strategic-thinking skills, which I can apply in both my professional and personal life.
Beyond the learning itself, I have had the opportunity to build meaningful connections with classmates and develop a supportive network that extends beyond the classroom. The experience has also exposed me to different industries and expanded my understanding of the corporate world.
My time at AU is building my confidence and equipping me with valuable skills. I feel inspired and ready to continue developing both my corporate ambitions and entrepreneurial mindset.
What obstacles have you had to overcome to pursue your education? How did you overcome them?
Deciding to pursue an MBA was one of the biggest challenges I have faced. It required me to consider my family’s support, financial responsibilities, and whether the journey would truly be worthwhile.
As an immigrant who spent half of my life in my home country of Ethiopia before moving to Canada, starting over was daunting. I carried the weight of my past while trying to build a new future, and it took time to reach my decision.
My wife played an invaluable role throughout that process. Her encouragement and belief in me made all the difference.
The next challenge was finding a university that could meet my needs without compromising on quality. After researching many institutions, I felt a strong connection to AU.
Looking back, each challenge became an important learning experience that has shaped my journey.
How do you balance your studies with other responsibilities like work or family?
The secret to balancing my responsibilities is the support of my wife. She takes on many of our household responsibilities, allowing me to dedicate time to my studies.
I have also developed strategies to reduce stress. I plan my days carefully, adjusting my schedule according to my workload and family commitments while maintaining a calm and positive outlook.
I place a strong emphasis on emotional intelligence. During difficult times, I focus on optimism and on finding practical solutions rather than dwelling on setbacks.
Who is your biggest cheerleader?
Above all, my greatest source of support is God, who has given me guidance, courage, and wisdom throughout my life.
As an orphan from a developing country, I started with little more than a dream. Today, I am grateful to be raising two children with my wife, pursuing academic success, and building a life in Canada.
My wife is my next greatest supporter. Without her encouragement, I would not have had the courage to make such significant decisions. She is more than my cheerleader—she is my partner in everything.
What is your favourite course?
I recently completed my Strategic Management (STMT 500) course, and it has been my favourite so far. The lessons and concepts have already proven valuable in my everyday life.
What are your plans for the future after completing your AU program?
My goal is to continue building my career in the corporate world, gain experience, and eventually open my own firm.
How is your AU education different from what you have experienced previously?
Having recently completed my first MBA course, it is still early to make broad comparisons, but the level of engagement has stood out to me.
The online discussions have exposed me to different perspectives and industries, enriching my understanding in ways I did not expect. I appreciate the effort that students put into researching and sharing information, which has helped me develop deeper insights.
