Why was online learning at Athabasca University the right fit for you?
I chose Athabasca University because it offered the flexibility to study from home. With three children, it wasn’t feasible for me to work and attend full-time, in-person classes. I wanted to be present for my children while continuing my education.
How has studying at AU helped you achieve your goals?
Studying at Athabasca University has made it possible for me to balance my education with my personal responsibilities.
AU’s flexible learning environment and resources have fuelled my passion for nursing and helped me succeed academically. I was proud to be named to the 2025–26 honours list.
What obstacles have you had to overcome to pursue your education? How did you overcome them?
Balancing school while raising three children, relocating, and changing jobs has been challenging. Financial pressures were also difficult at times, but I remained focused on my goals.
One of the most valuable supports I found at AU was the student aid advising team. They helped me navigate financial assistance options, which eased some of the financial stress and allowed me to continue my education without long interruptions.
Through persistence and support, I’ve been able to turn those challenges into stepping stones towards success.
How do you balance your studies with other responsibilities like work or family?
Balancing studies, work, and family comes down to planning, communication, and flexibility. I create schedules that set aside dedicated time for school, work, and my children.
I also set daily and weekly goals to stay organized and use online tools and apps to help manage deadlines and tasks. Shared digital calendars help keep my children informed about my schedule and commitments.
As a single parent, open communication has been especially important. Staying organized and maintaining that communication has helped me successfully continue my education.
Who is your biggest cheerleader?
My children. They’ve been incredibly patient and supportive throughout this journey, and I hope I’m showing them what dedication and hard work can achieve.
I’m also grateful for the flexibility within my casual nursing position and for the support of my public health team, which has helped me balance work and school.
What is your favourite course?
NURS 434: Community Health Promotion.
What are your plans for the future after completing your AU program?
After finishing my degree in July, I plan to apply to a master’s program in nursing and pursue a career in teaching, with a focus on nursing education.
I hope to support and inspire future nursing students, especially those facing challenges like my own. My experience at AU has given me the understanding and empathy to mentor and guide others in their nursing careers.
How is your AU education different from what you have experienced previously?
Athabasca University stands out because of its flexibility and personalized approach to learning. The ability to study anytime and anywhere has allowed me to balance education, work, and family life.
AU has made it possible to pursue my degree in a way that fits my life, creating a learning experience that aligns with both my responsibilities and goals.
