Science Outreach - Athabasca presents Searching for Magma in Central Chile
Join Science Outreach - Athabasca for a free community event titled Searching for Magma in Central Chile: Using Geophysics to Explore Volcanoes, with speaker Dr. Darcy Cordell, Athabasca University assistant professor.
The presentation will be held at the Athabasca University Governing Council Chambers, 1 University Drive, Athabasca, Alta.
Volcanoes pose a serious risk to society and understanding the size of future eruptions, the volume of magma underground, and the processes that lead to eruptions is critical to our understanding of risk. The Laguna del Maule volcano in central Chile is an excellent example of a large volcano that is showing significant signs of unrest for nearly two decades but has not yet erupted.
The presentation will detail some of Cordell's research adventures at this volcano as he travelled to Chile to collect geophysical data by truck, helicopter, horse, and boat to understand its inner workings.
Please note that the event may be photographed or recorded and shared. Those unable to attend in person may be able to join virtually through Microsoft Teams. A link will be posted on the Science Outreach - Athabasca - upcoming events page on the day of the event.
Refreshments and door prizes will be provided.
