Athabasca University community members are invited to an online screening of təm kʷaθ nan (Namesake) on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. (Mountain), hosted by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Created in part by executive producer Emily White, Master of Arts — Interdisciplinary Studies student and intergovernmental relations manager for the Tla'amin Nation, this film follows an ongoing conversation between Tla’amin Nation and the city of Powell River, B.C. about the city name which honours Israel Wood Powell, whose policies harmed Tla’amin people and culture. As the Nation asks the city to consider a new name, the community responds with reflection, resistance, allyship, and difficult conversations about history, identity, and belonging.
Following the screening, attendees can join a 30-minute discussion and audience Q&A with executive producer and AU graduate student Emily White and other members of the production team.
