My name is Dr. Sean Ryan (he/him). I would describe myself as an environmental sociologist and historian. My PhD focused on how ecology historically structured knowledge, thought, and action surrounding what nature is, how it should be protected, and how we should use it. My subsequent research dealt with nontraditional protected areas in Alberta (e.g., Ducks Unlimited Canada). We found sub-optimal conservation efforts and outcomes. My final research focus was on how neoliberal conservation techniques have changed how we think about and protect nature in Canada. With one exception, all environmental groups and governments embraced commodification language.

Outside of research, I have been known to canoe some! A quote by Brent Kelly always makes me smile: ‘If there is a place, canoe there.’ I have canoed to places in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, Northwest Territories, and BC., on trips from 2-10 weeks long. I also did a short stint as an ocean kayak guide off Vancouver Island. In terms of my teaching career, I was an Associate Lecturer at the University of Alberta teaching a variety of courses, including outdoor recreation, sociology, parks and protected area management, tourism, and leadership. I designed and tutored ENVS courses at Athabasca University and I worked in the graduate program, MAIS, teaching climate change and governance courses. Currently, I am back tutoring ENVS courses at AU. The plan is for this part time gig to be supplemented by a short-term nature-based eco-cabin rental business on our property in Quebec. We hope to host guests and help them reconnect to nature. In a sense, life comes full circle as I began working in summer camps as a youth and now will be hosting guests and offering canoe, paddleboard, and sailing experiences! A degree in environmental studies can take you places you never imagined!!
