My academic work explores the history, literature, identities, thought, and practice of ancient Judaism and Christian origins. With a primary focus on the Dead Sea Scrolls, I trace how scribal cultures inherited and extended ancient scriptural traditions in the mid- to late-Second Temple period (ca. 300 BCE to 70 CE). My research and publications engage a wide range of ancient writings across the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, New Testament, Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, and Septuagint. Current projects include a study of the scribal development of Daniel traditions in ancient Judaism and a fresh comparative study of Qumran and Christian origins. I am a former Canada Research Chair and Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. My books and articles have garnered awards including the Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise and the David Noel Freedman Award for Excellence and Creativity in Hebrew Bible Scholarship.
