Designing Engagement Strategies for Genomics-informed Oncology Nursing: Comparative Prospective Cross-Jurisdictional Policy Analysis [DESIGN: Policy]

Overview

This catalyst grant aims to generate relevant evidence and policy options to complement advancements in precision healthcare for genomics-informed oncology nursing practice.

This project will use three phases of research: Phase 1 is a comparative policy analysis, Phase 2 uses interviews and policy dialogues and Phase 3 synthesis and policy recommendations. The phases will pursue the following objectives:

• Compare international genomic nursing policies to those in Canada to determine how policy can align to the quintuple aim.
• Engage key stakeholders to obtain evidence on the required features of policy, professional guidelines, role descriptions and responsibilities that will guide oncology nurses as clinicians, researchers, health leaders, educators, and regulators for safe and equitable integration of genomics across the cancer care continuum.
• Contextualize evidence to recommend policy priorities and options that will guide nursing practice and interprofessional and intersectoral collaboration to ensure all Canadians benefit from genomic discoveries.

Specific activities include but are not limited to: assisting with all phases of the CIHR funded project, including comparative policy analysis, preparing and submitting REB applications, qualitative research, policy dialogues, developing policy recommendations and knowledge mobilization.

The primary job duties for the field research assistant (RA Category 3) will include:

1. Engage in all three phases of the research
2. assist with literatures reviews and policy analysis
3. assist to write the research protocol for the phase 2 qualitative research and submit for REB approval
4. organize policy dialogues
5. participate in recruitment, data collection, analysis, synthesis and publication (scholarly and lay publications) for all phases of the project
6. manage aspects of the project to ensure the project meets the grant timelines, all reporting requirements and deliverables
7. support the investigative team and advisory committee by arranging meetings, noting the meetings and participating in discussions.

The successful candidate will work with, and directly report to, Dr. Jacqueline Limoges at Athabasca University. Dr. Limoges and other members of the investigative team will provide adequate training for the primary duties outlined above that will be required.

Qualifications

1. Registered nurse
2. Masters degree and preferably enrolled in a PhD program
3. Knowledge of nursing policy and regulation and keen interest in nursing and genomics
4. Exceptional organization skills and able to complete work in a timely manner
5. Able to work collaboratively and collegially in a team environment
6. Previous research experience an asset

This is an excellent opportunity to participate in a one-year research project that will generate policy options to shape an innovative area of nursing practice. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to collaborate with leaders in policy and genomics in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.

The position involves remote work and the ability to work across time zones between Canada and the United Kingdom.
