Unit 7
Chinese Religions

Unit 7 is different from the other units of the course because it treats not one religion, but several. Unit 7 examines Confucianism and Daoism, and it examines religious ideas about humanity and the world that commingle with these traditions to give rise to a broad spectrum of practice which is designated “Religious Daoism” and “Popular Religion.” As is common for the Eastern religions, in China relatively little importance is placed on adherence to a single tradition; thus, the Chinese have historically been comfortable with adopting those aspects of different teachings which best suit their day-to-day needs.
