Enhancing Rural and Regional Real Estate through Community Learning
Overview
This project is looking for a Research Assistant to assist with an Alberta Real Estate Foundation‐funded study that will investigate how climate change, the pandemic, the opioid crisis and lower revenues in the oil and gas industry are all having a serious impact on the future of rural Alberta communities. This initiative focuses on the education of related professionals and the public in respect to the role that real estate can play in the economic, environmental, and social recovery of rural and regional Alberta.

Specific activities include, but are not limited to:
The primary job duties for the field research assistant will include:
- Support data analysis, calculations and write reports
- Understand and apply integrated system design
- Attend project meetings
- Participate in design charettes
- Create content for the project website
- Assist with the culminating conference event
- Attend workshops and deliver presentations
- Experience and knowledge using appropriate qualitative software
The successful candidate will gain valuable knowledge in the broad areas of Economic Diversification, specifically Human Capital, and Economic Community Development. They will acquire hands‐on learning and research skills through quantitative data review, qualitative interviewing, data collection, coding and analysis. They will also gain experience communicating with diverse audiences, including other academics and professionals within the scope of the study. All skills acquired will be professionally transferable.
The successful candidate will work with, and directly report to, Dr. Hussein Alzyoud and Dr. Eduardo Ordonez‐Ponce at Athabasca University. Dr. Alzyoud will provide adequate training for the participant recruitment and scheduling, and the data collection, analysis, and dissemination activities that will be required.
Qualifications
The total hours for this position are 35 hours per month over 14 months. The weekly hours will vary but may be no more than 9 hours per week. Rate of pay commensurate with experience and collective agreement provisions. The successful candidate with a minimum of a master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Economics, or directly related field such as Economic community development, Planning, or other Social Sciences related field. Along with the relevant academic credentials mentioned above, this position requires excellent communication, organizational, and administration skills. Prefer someone based in Alberta, incase we may need to travel to the communities.
In light of the current COVID 19 context, work for this position will take place remotely. However, should circumstances change during the time period of this work, there will be opportunities for the successful candidate to work in person with the research team.
