Overview
FNCE 234: Introduction to Finance is a three-credit course that introduces basic principles of finance. Students will develop a fundamental understanding of the finance world, which will build a base for pursuing a career in the financial services industry.
Outline
Lessons 1 to 3:
- finance as a scientific disciplinebasic building blocks of a financial systemaccounting information used for financial decision making
Lessons 4 to 6:
- time value of moneycapital budgeting
Lessons 7 to 9:
- the Law of One Price as applied to bonds and common stocks evaluation
Lessons 10 to 12:
- overview of risk management, risk management methods, and portfolio theory
Lessons 13 to 15:
- relationships among various securities
Lessons 16 and 17:
- relationships between value creation and a firm’s strategic financial decisions
Evaluation
To receive credit in FNCE 234, you must achieve a composite course grade of at least a “D” (50 per cent) and a grade of at least 50 percent on the final examination. The weighting of the composite course grade is as follows:
