Athabasca University Celebrates New President
Athabasca University (AU) has a new president and over 1,000 new graduates after Convocation ceremonies in June.
Dr. Frits Pannekoek was formally installed as the sixth president of Athabasca University on Thursday, June 9, 2005, the first day of this year's three-day Convocation ceremonies.
"Convocation is a very special time to start my term as president. I cannot think of a better introduction to the dedication and enthusiasm that make up Athabasca University," Pannekoek said. "To be part of the excitement and ceremony, to watch celebrating graduates and proud families, I was extremely moved."
Pannekoek said these are exciting times to be president of Canada's fastest growing, most dynamic, online, distance and open University and that AU is the university of the future.
"In the next ten years, Athabasca University will become the pre-eminent e-centre for Alberta's participation in the new knowledge economy. AU will be the Canadian leader in e-learning and in e-research. This institution will be recognized as a world leader in the transformation of open and distance universities to meet the challenges of the e-learning generation."
