Areas of Specialization

Students designate an "Area of Specialization" from the thematic clusters offered by MAIS faculty (see Program Concentrations). Students who choose to pursue one area of specialization will be required to successfully complete the two MAIS core courses, four courses in a cluster of inquiry (e.g., educational studies), the MAIS Integrated Project (i.e., a project related to the area of inquiry and supervised by a specialist), and four electives from across the curriculum. Students should contact the MAIS Office for advice on planning their studies.

Students will be required to declare their route upon completion of the two core courses (MAIS 601 and MAIS 602) and two elective courses (i.e., area of specialization or independent track). Please see Study Plan Submission below.

Students wishing to complete two areas of specialization, may apply to the Director (in their Study Plan) for approval of a second stream if they (1) demonstrate plans to complete four courses in each stream; and (2) provide a rationale as to how they will integrate course work across both streams in the MAIS 701 Final Project.

NOTE: MAIS 640 and/or MAIS 622 senior methods courses are recommended to students who are interested in action research, field research, interviews, etc., and who wish to focus their research topic and acquire advanced research skills. These courses are recommended to be taken just before or in conjunction with the final MAIS project. These courses are designed to help students benefit from advanced methodology courses. As well, they can be taken as an option and used toward any area of specialization as long as the topic of the major paper fits into the area of specialization.

Only in exceptional circumstances will the MAIS consider courses transferred from other institutions to count toward a particular area of specialization. This will be evaluated on a case by case basis, and is at the discretion of the MAIS Director.

Study Plan Submissions

To declare or change your area of specialization, please email your completed study plan (see template below) to the MAIS Office: E-mail: mais@athabascau.ca

Upon completion of the two MAIS core courses (MAIS 601 and MAIS 602) and two elective courses, students are required to declare an area of specialization by submitting a study plan to the MAIS Office for approval.

For a list of Program Specializations, please go to Program Concentrations. To qualify as a specialization, students must complete a minimum of four courses within the program concentration, before commencing their integrated project.

Students wishing to complete two areas of specialization, may apply to the Director (in their Study Plan) for approval of a second stream if they (1) demonstrate plans to complete four courses in each stream; and (2) provide a rationale as to how they will integrate course work across both streams in the MAIS 701 final project.

If choosing the "Independent Track" you will be required to identify a strategy for developing your own plan of study. You will need to provide a rationale to support the weaving together of your proposed MAIS courses into a cohesive whole. That is, how will weaving the courses from across the MAIS curriculum help you to achieve your goal?

Please use the Sample Study Plan as a template; we require your study plan using this format.
