MAIS Program Introduction
Students can pursue specializations in such streams of inquiry as: adult education, Canadian studies, community studies, cultural studies, educational studies, equity studies, global change, historical studies, information studies, and work, organization and leadership. Or, if their undergraduate preparation permits, they can undertake a wholly independent program of inquiry. Each program of study is "capped" with a final, integrated project that challenges students to bring their newly acquired skills and knowledge to bear on a particular aspect of their experience, workplace, or community—which allows them to demonstrate how they have consolidated and integrated the knowledge that they brought to, and gained during, the course of their studies.
The MAIS degree can be completed in two years of full-time or six years of part-time study. Courses are offered in grouped- and individualized-study mode. Grouped-study courses are seminar based, have weekly reading schedules and Web-based conference boards, begin in fall, winter, and spring; and are generally completed over thirteen to fifteen weeks. Individualized-study courses begin on the first day of every month, and are generally completed within four to six months. Students are encouraged to choose courses that sustain and develop their intellectual interests as well as complement their program of study.
