The course materials for Spanish 200 include the items listed below. If you find that any items are missing from your course package, please contact the Course Materials department of Athabasca University as soon as possible. You may call Athabasca University, toll free, from anywhere in Canada and the United States at 1-800-788-9041, and ask to speak to someone in Course Materials (ext. 6366). Students in the Edmonton and Calgary dialing areas are asked to call the Learning Centres to connect with the automated attendant, and then dial the four-digit extension. Textbook: Destinos: Second Edition of the Alternate Edition. Bill VanPatten, Martha Alford Marks, and Richard V. Teschner. Boston: McGraw-Hill, 2002. The textbook contains 52 lessons. For this course, you will be referring to Lessons 1 through 26 only, and also to Appendix 1: Answer Section, pp. 335-341.
Listening Comprehension CDs (purple): The headphone symbol in the margin of the textbook tells you when to use the audio CDs. In Spanish 200 you will use Disks 1 through 7 only.
Workbook/Study Guide: The Workbook/Study Guide I is designed to help you work on your own. If you follow the steps and instructions provided, you will have no problem working through the 26 lessons in this course.
Student Audio CD Program to accompany Destinos Part A (red): Lessons 1 to 26 audio CDs are to be used in conjunction with the corresponding lessons in the Workbook/Study Guide I. A headphone symbol in the margin tells you when to use the audio CD for a given lesson.
Student Manual: The Student Manual has been prepared by Athabasca University. It contains essential information about the course and the procedures you should follow to complete it successfully. Please read it through carefully before you begin your studies.
Assignment Manual: This booklet sets out what you are required to do in the course. It lists learning objectives and provides instructions for your evaluation activities as well as the Final Oral Examination. It contains draft Tutor Marked Written Exercises for you to practice on as well as the good copies you will complete and send in to your tutor for grading. It also contains the questions you will use to prepare for your Tutor Marked Oral Exercises.
Forms: The forms you will need to submit assignments or inform Athabasca University of a change in your status as a student are included in your course materials package.
Spanish-English/English-Spanish dictionary: A Spanish-English Vocabulary is included in the textbook (pages A21 to A49) but an English-Spanish dictionary may be useful to you. If you already own a dictionary, check with your tutor to see if it is appropriate for this level of study. If you feel you need to buy one, be sure you get one that has lots of examples. Since Destinos textbook does not include a verb chart at the end of the 52 lessons, you may consider buying a book of (5000 or 10000) Spanish Verbs that includes the conjugations in all tenses and moods.
A computer, an audio CD player, a TV and a VCR: You will need access to this equipment for the audio and video components of the course.
Spanish 200 requires that you view the appropriate television broadcasts or the videotapes as you progress through the course. If you are not able to view the broadcasts, or if you have enrolled in this course at a time that does not coincide with the current broadcast schedule, you will need to borrow the videotapes from the Athabasca University library. See the Library Services section in the Student Manual.
You can also access the series Destinos from your own computer, at your convenience. Note that you will need a powerful computer with the appropriate programs to allow you access to Learners Resources.
